A long ago, there were two demons named Viḍālāsura and Utpalāsura. They became haughty and dangerous after getting the boon from Brahmā. As per the boon, they couldn't be killed by any masculine entity. They invaded Svarga, Martya (earth), Gāndharvaloka and other places and zapped many poor. The Devatās complained about them to Brahmā. Lord Brahmā went to Kailāśa and requested Lord Śiva for solving this problem. Lord Śiva assured him and advised him to be patient. Paramśiva sent sage Nārada to those demons. Nārada told them about the divine elegance of Jagadambā Parāśakti. Hearing this, they became excited . They planned to kidnap Goddess Girijā. Thereafter they went to Kailāśa. In the beautiful garden of Kailāśa, Goddess Pārvatī was playing with a Kanduka (कन्दुक) or ball. Looking at her, they became lecherous. They took the disguise of Pramathas or Śiva's attendants. Seeing them, lord Śiva understood their real identity but he didn't stop them. When they went near Goddess Durgā, Lord Śiva pointed out —
कटाक्षिताऽथ देवेन दुर्गा दुर्गतिघातिनी। दैत्याविमाविति गणौ नेति सर्वस्वरूपिणौ ॥
Goddess Pārvatī understood his signal. She started playing with them. She threw her ball towards them. It became so powerful like a weapon and hit them. As a result, they started roaming like a vortex and then they were killed.
Later, the ball was established as Kandukeśvara (कन्दुकेश्वर) Liṅga in Varanasi.
